Junior Company Het Nationale Ballet | In the Future
To celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Junior Company, the Dutch National Ballet’s youth company will be touring the Netherlands with an anniversary programme full of surprises: In the Future.
Since its foundation in 2013, the Junior Company has proved a very successful breeding ground for extremely talented youngsters. Many talented dancers from the Junior Company, including Michaela DePrince, Jessica Xuan, Sho Yamada and Martin ten Kortenaar, have risen to the higher ranks of Dutch National Ballet and around a quarter of the company is now comprised of former Junior Company dancers.
In the Future
In the Future is an attractive, yet daring programme for twelve dancers, which is tailored to the Junior Company and introduces the stars of the future in a triple bill. The anniversary programme includes a world premiere by Juanjo Arqués and a Junior Company premiere by Hans van Manen.
In May 2017, Dutch National Ballet started a crowdfunding campaign for the creation of a new ballet for the Junior Company by choreographer Juanjo Arqués, Young Creative Associate of Dutch National Ballet. The successful campaign resulted in the ballet Fingers in the Air, set to a new composition by Scanner, which will premiere in the programme.
New to the Junior Company is the ballet In the Future, by Hans van Manen to music by David Byrne. Van Manen created the work in 1986 for Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, and it has since been danced by Stuttgarter Ballett and Introdans Ensemble for Youth, among other companies. It is the first time that Dutch National Ballet has danced In the Future, which is an energetic, swinging, amusing and surprising work, with inventive costumes by Keso Dekker.
The programme also includes the Pas de Six and the Tarantella from the classical ballet Napoli, created in 1842 by the Danish choreographer August Bournonville.
Nowadays it is hard to imagine the Dutch ballet world without the Junior Company. Founded in 2013, the Junior Company has already more than proved its right to existence, through successful tours of the Netherlands performing at over twenty medium-sized theatres and tours abroad (to Spain, Austria, Germany, England and Switzerland), as well as a great many smaller and larger performances for special occasions. In 2014-2015, the Junior Company collaborated with dance company ISH on creating Narnia: The lion, the witch and the wardrobe. For this season a whole new adventurous production is scheduled: Grimm.
Alongside their own programmes, the young dancers also perform in the corps de ballet of the main company. This season, they will be taking part in The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quichotte and Mata Hari. The Junior Company is a real breeding ground for talent. For instance, Michaela DePrince, Jessica Xuan, Sho Yamada and Martin ten Kortenaar rapidly moved up from the Junior Company to Dutch National Ballet, where they even dance main roles occasionally.
